Wild Mushroom Tours @ Elements Adventure Company
Whether you’re a modern-day druid, an edible wild mushroom connoisseur, or just enjoy a walk in the woods, come out for a day of wild-mushroom hunting in the Okanagan.  As an introduction to mushroom identification, we will visit two local organic farms to find some of the more common, delectable species, and then head out into the wild forests East of Vernon.
Our wild mushroom tours depart Vernon at 9 am and return by 5 pm. Transportation is included.
Please note, this is not a mushroom picking tour, but a great way to learn the basics about mushrooms, and how to use an identification guidebook.
$75 plus GST including guiding & transport to the Lumby valley from the Vernon Tourist Information Centre (3004-39th Ave) in downtown Vernon BC – and back again.  For children aged 5-10, cost is $20 per child.  FREE for children 4 and under.
DISCOUNTS: 10% for groups of 3-5; 15% for 6 or more. No individual payments, please.

Details
BLACK HAWK DOWN

Action and storyline based upon actual historic events in Mogadishu, Somalia, 1993… Somalians suffer from widespread famine as a warlord stops international aid from his own people causing starvation and civil war.

U.S. Army Rangers were sent to remove this warlord from power. It was a near-disastrous mission in Somalia on October 3, 1993 where nearly 100 U.S. Army Rangers were dropped by helicopter deep into the capital city of Mogadishu to capture two top lieutenants of a Somali warlord. The result is a large and drawn-out firefight between the Rangers and hundreds of Somali gunmen which led to the destruction of two U.S. Black Hawk helicopters and heroic efforts by the Rangers.

Writing Through Grief with Janelle Hardy @ Caetani Cultural Centre
Writing Through Grief is about witnessing and allowing for the full range of feelings that come with loss.
It’s hard to grieve fully and deeply when grieving is not honoured or supported, and when the people and culture around you feel so uncomfortable with your feelings and their own. How do we grieve when we’ve never seen anyone go through a healthy grieving process? How do we grieve when we can’t cry around our loved ones? How do we grieve when we don’t know how?
Writing Through Grief is a discovery of the beauty that comes on the other side of grief. The sparkling moments of joy and connection, all of which are only possible because of the grieving that has been done – the crying of tears, the anger, the sadness, the acceptance of how unfair life can be. It is through honouring our grief that we come to understand and honour our joy better.
In this series we’ll use a writing circle format with creative writing prompts to explore and move through your grief in a deep, kind and joyful way.

Fall, 2018: PROSE
OCTOBER 16 to DECEMBER 4
Tuesday Evenings, 6:00 to 9:00pm, Caetani Library

Classes will be a mixture of discussions about contemporary composition in prose, demonstrations concerning both writing and editing and finding the right shapes for fiction or memoir or non-fiction, and critiquing sessions that will focus on class members’ work.
Because I am helplessly addicted to reading contemporary literature, my hope is that every member of this class will be refining skills that are current, professional and aimed at seeking an audience.
This is the ideal class for writers who are working away on her or his own and could use the support of a focused and professional community of writers, especially if she or he is in the middle of a manuscript. I am just re-engaging on the writing of a large novel myself called, tentatively, The Kitchen Sessions, and because of that, teaching this class will be timely for me as it will force me to articulate the kinds of compositions I am re-engaging in.
If you are interested in exploring my career as a professional writer, teacher and editor so you understand my background and interests in prose better, please visit my website: www.johnlent.ca

Vernon Film Society: The Wife @ Galaxy Cinemas Vernon
Director: Björn Runge
Cast: Glenn Close, Jonathan Pryce, Christian Slater
Year: 2018
Runtime: 100 minutes
Country: Sweden, USA, UK
Language: English
Rating: 14A
A incisive study of celebrity, marriage, and the creative process — as well as a showcase for the talents of acclaimed actors Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce — The Wife explodes the old notion that behind every great man stands a great woman.
Joe Castleman (Pryce) is being given the Nobel Prize for Literature, and he and wife Joan (Close) couldn't be happier. But from the moment the couple arrives in Stockholm, tensions rise. A nosy, insistent would-be biographer (Christian Slater, who also appears at this year's Festival in The Summit) is loitering in the hotel lobby, an attractive young photographer opens old wounds regarding past indiscretions, and Joe and Joan's son David (Max Irons), eternally irked at living in his father's shadow, sulks through the celebrations. What's more, with all the attention being paid to Joe's long career, the normally shy Joan is pushed uncomfortably into the spotlight, where long-kept secrets are in danger of being illuminated.
Based on the novel by Meg Wolitzer, The Wife is a procession of perfectly pitched scenes from a seemingly perfect marriage. Director Björn Runge calibrates each for maximum impact, focusing on unspoken agreements and long-simmering resentments. His greatest allies in the endeavour are, of course, his stars. Pryce exudes pathos as a literary icon still suffering from insecurities, while Close smoulders in an intricately textured, quietly devastating performance.
“[Close] is a marvel of twisty understatement here, delivering emotions that conceal as much as they reveal, and offering onion-like layers that invite repeat viewings in light of some of the film's later revelations.” - Andrew Barker, Variety

Fred Skeleton Theatre Presents: Hedwig and the Angry Inch @ The Creekside Theatre
Text by John Cameron Mitchell, Music and Lyrics by Stephen Trask

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is an everyday tale of Gummi Bears, betrayal, a botched sex change operation, and the quest to find true love.

This outrageous and unexpectedly hilarious rock musical tells the story of Hansel Schmidt, a slip of a girly-boy from communist East Berlin who becomes Hedwig Robinson, ‘the internationally ignored song stylist barely standing before you’. Her journey to find true love, and her other half, takes her across the Berlin Wall, across the world, and from man to woman.

Contains adult themes and language.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York.

Creative Un-Blocking Workshop with Janelle Hardy @ Caetani Cultural Centre
In this two-part workshop we’ll go over all of the ways we get in our own way creatively – perfectionism, procrastination, resistance, creative block, and I’ll give you creative and body-based tools to support moving out of those states and back into a place of joyful productivity.
This is a two-part workshop so you’ll have time to practice the unblocking techniques, then return to refine them. Please come wearing comfortable clothes, a willingness to move and try new things, and something to write on.
You’ll leave the workshop feeling refreshed, delighted and resourced to deal with the inevitable challenges that arise when working on creative projects.
