As we identify themes, patterns and throughlines in your life story you’ll write, and write with delight, astonishment and pleasure. You’ll learn how to bring your stories out of your head and memory and onto the paper in a compelling way.
Plenty of support and tips to break through writer’s block will be shared, and you’ll finish with several short personal stories written, and confidence that you can keep going.

Signature Speaker Series: Mariana Brussoni @ Okanagan College
Mariana Brussoni, author of  Rethinking Risk: Are Children Too Safe For Their Own Good?
It used to be normal for children to spend long hours outdoors and away from watchful adults, playing how and where they chose. Today’s children spend more time indoors, supervised, in structured activities, and in front of screens. Shouts of “Be careful!” “Not so high!” “Stop that!” are common on the playground.

Many parents struggle to find a balance between bubble wrapping their kids and not protecting them enough. Fears of strangers, traffic and social services can overwhelm parents, making it hard for them to let go.

Research is mounting on the importance of giving kids more opportunities for risky play outdoors. Risky play is thrilling and exciting play where children test their boundaries and flirt with uncertainty. They climb trees, build forts, and roam the
neighborhood with friends or play capture the flag. This kind of play is associated with children’s health, development and well-being, including increased physical activity, social skills, risk management skills, resilience and self-confidence. This interactive presentation will explore the evidence regarding causes and effects of changing childhoods, as well as strategies to restore balance.
