Shane Koyczan @ Vernon Performing Arts Centre
Powerfully engaging and authentic in attitude, his explorations are relevant to the changing times in the the way that Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Gordon Downie and Leonard Cohen are to theirs. But unlike the musicians that he is often compared to, poets rarely infiltrate pop culture.

Writing Through Grief with Janelle Hardy @ Caetani Cultural Centre
Writing Through Grief is about witnessing and allowing for the full range of feelings that come with loss.
It’s hard to grieve fully and deeply when grieving is not honoured or supported, and when the people and culture around you feel so uncomfortable with your feelings and their own. How do we grieve when we’ve never seen anyone go through a healthy grieving process? How do we grieve when we can’t cry around our loved ones? How do we grieve when we don’t know how?
Writing Through Grief is a discovery of the beauty that comes on the other side of grief. The sparkling moments of joy and connection, all of which are only possible because of the grieving that has been done – the crying of tears, the anger, the sadness, the acceptance of how unfair life can be. It is through honouring our grief that we come to understand and honour our joy better.
In this series we’ll use a writing circle format with creative writing prompts to explore and move through your grief in a deep, kind and joyful way.

With England’s WISHBONE ASH and Special Guests, The David Gogo Band!
$51.00 All Seats
One of England’s most iconic bands, Wishbone Ash will be on tour this fall in B.C. and the Vernon Performing Arts Centre will host both Wishbone Ash and Canadian bluesman David Gogo and his band on Wednesday, September 26th at 7:30 p.m.
Wishbone Ash has recorded 24 albums since their inception in 1969, in Torquay, Devon England. Those albums include Wishbone Ash, Pilgrimage, Argus, There’s the Rub, New England, Live in Paris and the recent “Power of Eternity.” These albums and many more have spawned some of the band’s most beloved hit songs such as, Throw Down the Sword, The King Will Come, Warrior, Blowin’ Free, Phoenix, and Persephone just to name a few.
Wishbone Ash are noted for their extensive use of the harmony-twin lead guitar format which had been attracting electric blues bands since Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page had played together in the Yardbirds in 1966. Indigenous Poetry Night @ Gallery Vertigo
Join us the last Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. for indigenous poetry nights at Gallery Vertigo.
Margo Tamez and Debbra Butler aim to inspire indigenous peoples in the North Okanagan to connect with their ancestral tradition of storytelling by participating in the indigenous poetry nights at Gallery Vertigo which are held the last Thursday of each month,
“Poetry for us is a very important tool and method for getting down to key stories, truths and remembering,” Tamez added. “Memory, globally, is a big area of social inquiry. The value of human memory, that’s something important to capture and nurture. For indigenous peoples to be able to uncover what happened to us, that’s very important for creativity.”
Margo Tamez, of Apache origin born and raised in southwestern Texas, moved to the Okanagan in 2010 to teach and contribute to the expansion of UBCO’s indigenous studies degree program.
Debbra Butler, who is of Thompson indigenous ancestry from Lytton, B.C. attends UBCO, seeking a Bachelor’s Degree, Majoring in Indigenous Studies.
“Art influences health and well-being. People can sort of recreate their lives through self-determination,” Tamez said. “We want to create a safe space for indigenous peoples who want to craft their voice and vision through poetry and creative writing.”
