What January’s slowdown in Canada could mean for spring
You may have seen headlines about Canada’s housing market slowing down in January.
That part is true. National home sales were down, and the numbers looked weak compared with last year. But there is some important context behind that.
A big factor was severe winter weather in parts of the country, which made it harder for people to get out, view homes, and complete transactions. In other words, some activity may have been delayed, not lost.
At the same time, economic uncertainty is still making buyers and sellers more cautious. That hesitation is real, and it is likely part of what we are seeing too.
A slow January doesn't automatically tell us what spring will look like.
New listings increased, which suggests many sellers are still getting ready to enter the market.
If more buyers return as the weather improves, competition could pick up quickly in certain price ranges, especially where inventory stays limited.
If you are planning to buy or sell in 2026, this is a good time to prepare before the market gets busier.
