After the last week, there is no doubt we are in WINTER! How did you fare in the cold snap? 

It's going to be awhile before the extent of the effect on local fruit and wine growers. Most of the local wine grapes, which are European varietals, can only tolerate to around - 24 C before they start to see devastating yield loss.

 Temperatures were low enough that they could kill the wine grape flower buds before the next season.

When the temperature heads to - 27 C or lower, it can actually kill the whole vine.

We are hoping for the best.

Cross-country ski instructor Lyle Nicholson demonstrates the proper body position for skiing down a trail: body leaning slightly forward with the weight on the ball of one foot, not the heel. A second session of Masters Social Ski Lessons in classic and skate, beginner to advanced, will be held at Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club at 10 a.m. on Feb. 4, 11, 18 and 25.


To begin, there are three types of skisโ€”waxless, wax(able) and skate. The differences are obvious but it needs to be pointed out that contrary to their name, waxless skis aren't truly waxless. They are different from the other two in that the latest versions have a hairy "skins" grip surface on the bottom of the ski under your boot. The hairs point toward the tail so they catch in the snow when you put weight on that ski while the other foot slides forward. They evolved from the earlier โ€œfish scaleโ€ models which had small sharp edges pointing toward the tail of the ski. Few stores sell fish scale skis anymore but there are still many around.
