Bank of Canada rate cut sparks hope in housing market
Canada’s housing market has been sluggish for much of the past year, but there’s a fresh signal that activity could be picking up.
On September 17, the Bank of Canada lowered its key interest rate to 2.5%, the lowest in three years. That small drop is already starting to make an impact. National home sales inched up just over 1% in August, the fifth month in a row of modest gains, according to CREA. Average prices also rose nearly 2% year over year.
Why it matters:
- Lower borrowing costs are giving some buyers a little more room to act.
- Sellers who were struggling to get offers may find renewed interest.
It’s early days, but experts believe this rate cut could help establish a trend of recovery heading into fall. The big question is whether demand will keep pace with affordability challenges and supply constraints.
If you’re wondering how these changes could affect your own plans, whether that’s buying, selling, or just keeping an eye on the market, reach out and we’ll share a local perspective.

Selling soon? Don’t make these mistakes
When sellers get ready to list, they usually strip a home down to basics. Think: clean, empty, neutral.
But sometimes that backfires. A little character, a mature tree, or even a scuffed wood floor can actually help buyers connect with a place.
We made a list of 7 things you should think twice about removing before you sell.
