What's Happening Around Vernon June 29 - July 5 '19

No matter which distance you choose to run, it will include amazing trails, beautiful views and great summer temperatures escaping from the valley heat. This will be a great race to take part in and will be a great summer goal for some and an opportune training race for others. SilverStar is situated high enough to beat the summer heat, yet lower enough to not be totally covered by the remnants of winter. Building upon our successes from last year, we only plan to make this race bigger and better each year. Racers last year were stoked, smiles and cheers coming from all participants, if you haven't taken on the Dragon it's time!

Taking place on Canada Day weekend provides a long weekend to ensure you have time to spend with your family and friends and take in all the other activities that exist at SilverStar Mountain. For more information, visit the website provided.

The Lumby Public Market is a seasonal Market that features owner-operated stalls and/or “day tables”. As a Public Market, we provide a showcase for local and area agricultural producers as well as artisans, crafters, musicians, home-based businesses and local entrepreneurs. The Greater Vernon Museum and Archives are pleased to announce that they are playing host to Voices from the Engraver, a travelling exhibit produced by the Bank of Canada Museum.

From June 13 until August 31, 2019, experience the creative process, the technical skill and the sheer artistry that underlie every series of Canadian stamps and banknotes, from concept to final product. Aimed at youth, families and adults, this exhibition is rich in artifacts and hands-on activities.

Adults can identify elaborate stamps from around the world, while children try their hand at reproducing the patterns of classic bank notes with the guilloché machine. Browse through digital timelines and biographies, or reminisce over past Canadian banknote series. There is something for everyone!

Funtastic Sports Society is a non-profit organization which hold the annual Funtastic Slo-Pitch Tournament and Music Festival every year during the Canada Day Long Weekend. Our main Vernon event is held at the DND Army Camp, with slo-pitch events happening on ball diamonds throughout the city!

Rock out on June 29-30, 2019 at the Okanagan 24’s 24-hour team and solo race or the 4-hour solo race.

The race is located at Silver Star mountain at an elevation of 1,609 m (5,280 ft) that makes it Canada’s highest 24-hour mountain bike race.

24-hour and 4-hour mountain bike races which are for all levels of riding ability. The 24-hour race categories are competitive teams of 5, solo racers and corporate teams of up to 10. The 4-hour race will allow for solo racers only to compete.

Growing Up Wild is a day camp for children ages 4 and 5. This is a half day camp that runs from 9 am - 12 pm, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday (July 2 - 4th). Themes change daily.

Come create with us this summer!  Our week long art camps are designed to encourage your child’s creative and technical art skills with fun and age appropriate projects. Projects include painting, drawing, sculpture, fibre art, printmaking, collage and mixed media. The class will hold an art exhibit for family and friends the last day of camp. Lunch is supervised; participants need to bring a lunch, drinks, snacks and wear art appropriate clothing. Price includes all materials.

Have fun learning to play the electric keyboard during these twice a week, one hour long, individual lessons. Quickly learn how to play melody with accompanying rhythm and chords together, while learning to choose and operate the features of the keyboard.  Beginners or anyone interested in improving their skill is welcome.  You will be surprised how easy and fun it is to play music on the electric keyboard! This is a wheel throwing and hand building class for beginners and those wanting to become proficient on the wheel. We will focus on individual challenges as you throw and hand build various forms. Fee includes 8 free drop-in sessions to be used by the end of the course. Please leave rings, watches and bracelets at home, wear clothing and footwear appropriate for a clay class. Hair should be tied back.  Students should bring an apron and an old bath towel. Price includes 1 bag of M340 clay, all other materials and the use of tools. Additional clay is available for purchase at the VCAC front desk.

The Greater Vernon Museum and Archives are pleased to announce that they are playing host to Voices from the Engraver, a travelling exhibit produced by the Bank of Canada Museum.

From June 13 until August 31, 2019, experience the creative process, the technical skill and the sheer artistry that underlie every series of Canadian stamps and banknotes, from concept to final product. Aimed at youth, families and adults, this exhibition is rich in artifacts and hands-on activities.

Adults can identify elaborate stamps from around the world, while children try their hand at reproducing the patterns of classic bank notes with the guilloché machine. Browse through digital timelines and biographies, or reminisce over past Canadian banknote series. There is something for everyone!

Wind down on Wednesday evenings with a deep stretch while watching the sunset over Lake Okanagan. You will be guided through a 60 minute yoga class targeting the main muscle groups of the body, getting deep into the tissues and releasing tension in your tight muscles. There will be charcuterie and nutritious snacks afterwards provided by Crudité & Co. and time to socialize!

Wahine Wednesdays are all about the girls getting together on the water - The Ladies of the Lake! Have fun learning to play the electric keyboard during these twice a week, one hour long, individual lessons. Over 300 dogs per day will be strutting their stuff the show ring in competition to win that coveted blue ribbon. Judging will starts at 8:00 am.

This is a perfect time to discover what breed of dog suits your lifestyle as Sporting, Non-Sporting, Working, Terriers, Hounds, Toys and Herding Dogs meet to compete. There will be two separate specialty conformation shows for Labrador Retrievers and a Finnish Lapphund specialty.

Other activities to watch will be the Obedience and Rally Obedience trials. Junior Handling Competitions will take place each day at noon, and on Saturday afternoon, after Best In Show judging.

We suggest you find a spot among the rows of apple trees, but there are so many places with a spectacular view–you just might have a hard time deciding! Relax and enjoy the sights, sounds and aromas in the orchard while the kids explore the farm playground and visit the animals. There are adult and child menu items available.

Allan Brooks Nature Centre is happy to announce that the Raptors are returning! For 1 weekend only July 4, 5, 6 and 7.

Raptor Flight Demonstrations and Encounter Courses available each day.

Flight Demonstrations get you close to five different bird species. Watch these amazing predators and learn about their importance in our ecosystem.

The presentation runs approximately 30-40 minutes. Click on the date and time of your choosing on the calendar linked to purchase your tickets.

Tickets may be available at the gate for an increased fee. Please remember to dress appropriately for the weather as all programs happen outside. For Combo tickets - choose the date and time of the Encounter Course and feel free to attend the Flight Demo that works best for your schedule.
