Groundhog Day: Okanagan Okie preps for rodent prognostication
There are plenty of marmots around the Allan Brooks Nature Centre where Okie's forecast will take place – but the real live critters are all hibernating this time of year.
Groundhog lore suggests that if the hog sees its shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. If not, spring will come early.
The Okie event takes place at 10:15 a.m. at the nature centre on Vernon's Commonage lands.
"Okanagan Okie will emerge at the ABNC grounds to check for a shadow and give the long-awaited news of when we can expect to bring out the shorts and flip-flops," the centre says.
The centre plans to live-stream the event at ABNC.ca for those unable to attend.

More ways to master the cross-country skiing trails
Photo: J.P. Squire
Cross-country skiers slow down and stop their forward progress by using the snowplow technique, tips together, tails apart. Novice skiers, above, learn how to snowplow during the four Masters Social Ski Lessons at Kelowna Nordic Ski and Snowshoe Club in January.
To complete your cross-country ski lessons in classic technique, here are the proper ways to herringbone and double-pole.
Just like using the snowplow to slow or stop your forward progress, the herringbone is your key for climbing steeper hills that you can't ascend by staying in the track-set trail with a higher tempo and shorter steps. (Don't herringbone in the track.)
