The Bank of Canada held steady. What happens next?
The Bank of Canada kept its policy rate at 2.25% on September 2. For anyone buying a home or renewing a mortgage this fall, there’s a little more to the story.
The Bank’s rate influences lenders’ prime rates, which affect variable mortgages. Fixed mortgage offers follow government bond yields more closely, and the Bank reported that long-term yields have risen, including in here Canada. That leaves room for new fixed mortgage offers to change even while the policy rate stays put.
Already have a fixed mortgage? Your rate stays set for the rest of your current term. Shopping for a home or approaching renewal? Ask your lender or mortgage broker for an updated quote, including the monthly payment and how long the offer is valid.
